Iran is not what I thought
Kourosh Ziabari- TELLISI (Teaching English Language and Literature In the Society of Iran) is the name referring to an international linguistics congress which was held at the State University of Guilan, located in the Caspian Sea bordering city of Rasht, from October 8th, for two days.
170 English language scholars and researchers from US, UK, Romania, South Africa and Egypt gathered in Iran and presented their lectures, posters and addresses in TELLISI congress up to October 10th in the auditoriums of humanities faculty of Guilan University.
The congress which is said to be the first one of its type in the northern Iran had three honorary guests from US, Russia and UK, all of them among the world-renowned linguistics scholars and professors.
Prof. Vivian J. Cook from the Newcastle University of England who is the editor of Oxford-affiliated journal of “Writing System Research”was the most distinguished guest attending the congress and that was why he attracted lots of students, academicians and reporters who came to Rasht from all over Iran to meet him.
Cook is the author of several books on various branches of linguistics, and his last book named “Second Language Learning and Language Teaching” was published on 2008 by the Hodder Educational publications.
I found a short interlude between his lectures and talked to him on various subjects, topics of his presentation, his viewpoint of Iran and his personal observations in Rasht.
a lotus sprout…
Mohsen Chavoshi; One of the most popular Iranian pop singers who released his latest album; “a lotus sprout” recently. Chavoshi started singing and composing in 2002 with two poets; Amir Arjeini and Hossein Safa, since then for 6 years he released a lot of famous and craze songs in his albums. Mohsen Chavoshi in 2006 selected as a singer of latest Dariush Mehrjuie’s film; “Santouri” and sang 4 songs.
In the “a lotus sprout” Chavoshi worked with Mohammadreza Ahari for arrangements and for this he had a big jump in quality of his songs. Chavoshi’s voice is a bit rough and sings with deep feelings, Perhaps this contrast makes people interested in his songs.
This album has 12 tracks in 66 minutes and we can see a composition between traditional, folk iranian and pop music.

The Daughter of Iran’s Cinema…
Golshifteh Farahani is an acclaimed iranian actress and musician. she was born on july 10 , 1983 in Iran and started studying music at age of 5, In 12 she entered a music school in Tehran and after graduation, she was accepted at the Viena Conservatory. At 14, Golshifteh cast in Dariush Mehrjui’s film; “The pear tree” and won the Crystal Rockfor Best Actress from the international section of the 16th Fajr Intenational Film Festival in Tehran. Since then she has acted in 18 films, many of which have received international awards. For ”Boutique” she won the Best Actress award from the 26th Nates Three Continets Festival in France. In recent years Golshifteh has acted in movies by some of Iran’s best directors:
Dariush Mehrjui in “Santouri”, Bahman Ghobadi’s “Half Moon” (winner of the Golden Shell at the 2006 San Sebastian Film Festival), Rasool Molagholipoor’s “M for Mother”(Iran’s nominee for the 2008 Academy Awards for the Best Foreign Language Film category), Ebrahim Hatamikia’s ”In the Name of The Father”(Best Film at Fajr International Film Festival) for which she won the special prize of the jury for the Best Actress from the 37th Roshd International Film Festival which was held in Tehran in 2007. Until now Golshifteh won and nominated for more than 9 movies in different International Festivals.
Golshifteh Farahani in 2008 showed herself in the one of the great Hollywood’s film; ”Body of Lies”. A movie that directed and produced by Ridley Scott with $70,000,000 budget. In this movie Goshifteh Farahani is acting for first actress with two super stars: Leonardo Dicaprio and Russell crowe… .
